Of this Linus, Paul makes mention in the Epistles to Timothy. The people, therefore, became the model for the church, and the law a parabolic sketch. En particulier Ferdinand Buisson (qui conçoit les grandes lois scolaires de 1881-1885 et crée les Écoles Normales Supérieures de Saint-Cloud et Fontenay-aux-Roses), Félix Pécaut et Jules Steeg. This established the preconditions for a series of conflicts, known as the French Wars of Religion. In fact, according to Wellman, they are preoccupied with evangelicals: “Liberals tended to comment more frequently about evangelicals than evangelicals about liberals.” Liberal churches “felt directly tested by the numerical success of evangelical congregations, and frequently bemoaned this competition.” In many ways, liberals viewed evangelicals, who they insist on calling “fundamentalists,” as the enemy: “For liberals, the disparagement of ‘fundamentalists’ became a cliché throughout the study.” In contrast, evangelicals’ main enemy is secular society and liberal culture, not mainline churches.

Later there was a neoorthodox movement, which, under the leadership of Karl Barth and Reinhold Niebuhr, sought a return to a theology of revelation; a new school of Bible interpretation as expressed in the work of Rudolf Bultmann; and a theology, derived in part from existentialism, developed by Paul Tillich. Most Lutherans will claim that salvation is by faith alone; but, then they call themselves "Lutherans," refusing to recognize that Luther taught something entirely different.

The one has come to be called “mainstream” and the other “evangelical.” The former includes most of the denominations mentioned above, while the evangelicals include smaller or more recently formed denominations, such as the Assemblies of God, or are less concerned with denominational life. Chances are that after this election, even if Congress impeaches the next president (which could happen to either major candidate), the republic will go on and the forces of consolidation and centralization will also remain thanks to the United States’ standing as a global hegemon.

Of those reformers who claim their decisions to strike books from the Canon are from the Holy Ghost, we ask that you please show proof. Remove belief in Divine inspiration from the sacred books, and what remains may be regarded as simply a human document of religious illusion or even of fraud. One cannot but feel that Father Bouyer is writing here in the light of an idealism born of his own former experience of Protestantism as religion, rather than from a strictly historical and theological point of view.

Calhoun gave an address in Congress in support of the Compromise of 1850, he said American religious bonds were broken and he pleaded that the nation's political bonds remain united. The churches most commonly associated with Protestantism can be divided along four fairly definitive lines: Mainline Protestants - a North American phrase - are those who trace their lineage to Luther, Calvin, or Anglicanism.
