This is the start of our adventure as we load up the 4WDs for an 600 km drive to outside Bayanhongor on the northern edge of the Gobi desert. Members of the international community sometimes organize hikes, fishing trips, and picnics on an ad hoc basis. The trip is fully supported which makes it suitable for anybody wanting to experience one of China’s most spectacular regions. There’s lots of great walks in the area and mostly accessible as self-guided hikes. The Thai-Lao languages are all tonal, with five or six tones in Lao, depending on the dialect, five in Thai, and up to 15 in others. The road here is narrow and really quiet. This was the "Death Railroad" commemorated in the David Lean movie, Bridge on the River Kwai [1957]. We take a few days in Lhasa to acclimatize to the altitude so that when we jump on our bikes we’ll be ready to ride.

The camel festival is an annual celebration held in the southern Gobi organised by a local NGO to help protect the Bactrian camel and the essential role it plays in the lives of the nomadic herders in the region. In summer, when the grasslands are at their busiest, opening hours extend till 9pm. The curds are made from the unskimmed milk, which is gently simmered over a slow fire, and then allowed to stand for some time, after which the thick cream is skimmed off and dried, and roasted millet often added to it.

One of the best places in Mongolia for back country walking, this park is a high alpine zone with numerous lakes, forests and glaciated peaks. Russia and the Republic of China recognise its autonomy. 1919 - The Chinese army occupies Outer Mongolia. 1920 - Mongolian revolutionaries found the Mongolian People's Party and open contact with Bolsheviks in Siberia. 1921 - With Red Army support, Mongolian revolutionaries drive out Chinese and Tsarist forces and install the Mongolian "people's government". 1924 - The People's Party chooses Lenin's "road to socialism bypassing capitalism" and renames itself the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP).

As the most powerful nomadic empire the world had yet seen, the Xiong Nu aggressively waged war against China, now under the rule of the Han Dynasty. You can buy things like Bulgarian wine and Danish butter cookies that aren't available in China. Many Mongolians continue to live in yurts, or gers, which are dome-shaped, tent-like structures. This trip is a FAMILY style cycle holiday. His court's unbacked currency had entered a hyperinflationary spiral and the Han-Chinese people revolted due to the Yuan's harsh restrictions. We have done all these itineraries before and know the route, best camping spots and greatest views. The 10th such meeting was also held in Tokyo in 2003. The cycling is done at an altitude between 1500 – 2500 metres above sea level. An old legend has it that it was through such a hole that a fair-haired man got into the ger of Alangua, the Mongols' ancestral mother, and begot three sons. The show has been running at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino for the last 15 years, featuring clowns, trapeze artists and contortionists. It may not exactly be Dickens’ 'Tale of Two Cities' but Taiwan could certainly be described as a 'Tale of Two Coasts'.
