My World GIS ( more info ) 'My World' is a Geographic Information System (GIS) tool that aids in the creation of visual representations of geographic data; in this case maps showing significant earthquakes concentrated near plate tectonic boundaries. 'My World' is directed by Daniel Edelson at the School of Education, Northwestern University. It allows the reconstruction of changes in the position of the magnetic poles and reversals of the magnetic poles in the geologic past. 3. � The theory that the Earth's crust is near to a state of equilibrium, and that large blocks of crust behave like blocks of ice floating in water. 4.�� A line on a graph or map, which represents an age for a rock. 5. � The properties of attraction produced by the Earth's magnetic field, which is dipolar, i.e. it has two poles (north and south) like a bar magnet. 7. � A buoyant mass of hot mantle material that rises to the base of the lithosphere and commonly produces volcanic activity and structural deformation in the central part of lithospheric plates. 8. � A valley of regional extent formed by block faulting in which tensional stresses tend to pull the crust apart.

He has repeatedly seen, at considerable heights on the bergs, both reddish-brown and blackish-brown ice. Bordering the liquid outer core is the mantle, which is composed of hot, molten rock called magma. Space-geodetic measurements to date have therefore not confirmed plate tectonics. The part of the Earth that makes up the plates is called the lithosphere. Is catastrophic plate tectonics part of Earth history? Armed with the knowledge of a new heat source, scientists realized that the Earth would be much older, and that its core was still sufficiently hot to be liquid.

Furthermore, paleomagnetic data had shown that the magnetic pole had also shifted during time. Oceanic crust (the thin crust under the oceans) is thinner and denser than continental crust. Some underlie ocean, while others underlie ocean and continent. Coal is most likely to form in subtropical to mid-latitude deltaic environments. The density difference between ocean basin rock and that of continents consequently produces a striking and instructive contrast between the average elevations of land and ocean floor, revealed in the hypsographic curve (hypso means altitude or elevation).

With the change in the tectonic plates, this larger land drifted to form different smaller land areas. On the basis of VLBI/GPS data for three sites in the Caribbean, the angular velocity of the relative motion between the Caribbean and North American plates was computed to have a rate of 0.23 � 0.08°/Myr, twice the NUVEL-1A rate of 0.11 � 0.03°/Myr; the direction was 62.2°N and -93.3°E, as against 74.3°N and 153.9°E. We also use field observations to determine the kinematics, slip rates, and seismic potential of regional faults.

Following his "escape" ( = concept of moving ridges ) in reply to Carey's observation about Antarctica being ringed with spreading ridges (thereby implying that continent to be shrinking), Wilson (1966) extrapolated this model to account for dissimilar fauna on either side of the Atlantic. Claims of earthquakes (and therefore brittle behavior) below the "660" are based on highly suspect data. During mountain building, any fluids containing metal sulphides may be squeezed laterally and concentrated in chemically favourable settings.
