Younger, shallow-water sediments are often located farther from the axial zones of the ridges than older ones -- the opposite of what is required by the plate-tectonics model, which postulates that as newly-formed oceanic lithosphere moves away from the spreading axis and cools, it gradually subsides to greater depths. There, Mesozoic strata still cover the southern margin of the uplift (right); the underlying Precambrian Uinta Group sediments are exposed only along the north flank.

Some plates are entirely oceanic crust (like the Pacific Plate) and some are oceanic crust with continental crust (like the North American Plate). Our emerging picture of plate tectonics is that the earth is heated inside, softening the deep rocks of the asthenosphere enough that they can move in great, slow convection currents that transfer heat from deep in the earth to near the surface. Suspiciously, the Laramide Orogeny took off just as arc magmatism related to the Farallon plate snuffed out.

Everyone agrees it has something to do with heat building up under the insulation, but the details for how this would work in the above model are a bit fuzzy.
